Newsflash

Mr Collins is to become the new Head Teacher of Somerhill Junior School in Hove! We are all really proud of Mr Collins and his achievement which I am sure you will agree is well deserved. We know he is going to be an amazing Head Teacher and we wish him all the best and good luck. Mr Collins takes up his new post in January. Ms Whiting is going to take over as acting Deputy Head and Senco for the Spring term. The Deputy Head post for Middle Street will be advertised early in the Spring term to begin in the Summer term.

Football News

Our girls’ team came third in a tournament on Tuesday. Ms Busby says they are showing real talent. Well done girls!

The boys’ team are playing again today after school at St John the Baptist school in East Brighton.

Halloween Cake Sale

Please don’t forget to come along to the PTA Halloween cake sale today at 3.00. There a lots of delicious spooky cakes to buy and eat. Buy one and help raise money for the school.

PTA Coffee Morning

The PTA team  are looking to recruit more members. They are holding a coffee morning on Wednesday 4th November at 9.00 in the Family room and are encouraging everyone who is interested to join them for a coffee and a chat. There will be more information at the Halloween cake sale if you are interested in joining the PTA.

Thunder Kids

Thunder Kids is a Saturday morning club for children, dads and male carers. The club is free and is ideal for children aged 5 to 10. The children get to have a go at a variety of activities with their dads and carers with some time built in for the men to get together for some grown up chat. Want to know more? Contact Tim Owers at Middle Street 323184 or pop in for a chat. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. The first session runs at Middle Street on Saturday November 7th starting at 9.00 and ending at 12.00.

Christmas Show

The school Christmas show takes place this year on Thursday 10th December in the afternoon. The show will take place at the Sallis Benny theatre.

The Nursery Teachers and staff would like to say a big THANKYOU to Fiona (Evelyn, Teddy and Felix’s mum) for making a fabulous and very spooky castle for the Nursery.

Parents Evening

Thank you to all of you who came along to our parent consultation evenings this week. If for any reason you were not able to make it do arrange with the teacher to come in at another time.

Football News

Ms Busby has entered the school football team in the small school’s league. They now have a match just about every week until the end of term. They are playing extremely well and have been recently complimented on their ball skills. They look set to begin winning more matches. Their next match is on 22nd October. The girl’s football team will be playing in a tournament on Tuesday 20th October. Good luck to both teams! 

Dragon Drama

A drama group ran workshops for years 1 to 6 on Tuesday. The sessions were great fun and enjoyed by all.

To celebrate Halloween the School Association are organising a cake sale to be held on Thursday 22nd October from 3.00 till 4.00. Donations of cakes, toffee apples etc will be gratefully received. Please deliver donations to the family room on the morning of the cake sale. Children can dress up for the day in their Halloween costumes and donate 50p.

Hooray!

Ofsted have gone! They said the children were brilliant and thanked them for an enjoyable visit. It has been a stressful 2 days, but it all went very well. The report will be published in about a couple of weeks and that’s when you can find out the details and judgements. Thank you to those parents and carers who completed the questionnaires which contributed to the final judgements.

Art Club day change

Next week Art Club will run on Monday instead of the usual day due to Parent consultation evenings.

Children from Hammersmith visit Middle Street

Ms Stewart who now works in a school in London came along on Tuesday with her class of children. They joined Year 5 to discuss and compare life in Brighton with living in London. Ms Stewart and her lovely class enjoyed their visit very much and found out lots about Middle Street and Brighton.

Parent Consultation Meetings

Parent consultation meetings take place on Tuesday 13th October and Wednesday 14th October. This terms meetings focus on how the children have settled into their new class and their learning targets. Letters were sent home on Wednesday  with appointment times. If you did not receive a letter please ask at the office for a copy.

On Time Teds

The winners of the On Time Teds this week are Year 2 with 1 late mark and Year 6 with 5 late marks.  Well done to both classes for being so punctual.

How Can You Help Win £1000 for the School?

When you shop at Waitrose ask for a special token and pop it in the box provided in Waitrose. If we collect enough tokens we could have a chance of winning money to go towards the a new playground on the roof. The School Association have organised the collection with Waitrose as part of their fundraising activities.

Halloween Cake Sale

To celebrate Halloween the School Association are organising a cake sale to be held on Thursday 22nd October from 3.00 till 4.00. More information to follow very soon.

Headlice Alert

Those pesky beasties are back! Please check your child’s head and the rest of the family regularly and treat as appropriate. If you need help the School Nurse is very willing to advise you. You can contact her via the school office.

Lost

Matilda French has lost her glasses which are in a grey Specsavers case. The glasses are turquoise and black.

Issy Lewis in Year has also lost her glasses. Issy lost her glasses after football training on Wednesday. The glasses are purple and wire framed. If you find either pair of glasses please hand them into the office.

Equality and Human Rights Commission at Middle Street

Did you see Year 6 on BBC South on Tuesday evening? If you didn’t, you can view the news item on the BBC website.  Better still check out the Middle Street website to watch the video filmed by Poppy Stout during the visit. Thanks Poppy!

Trevor Philips from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission was joined by Sadiq Khan and Anne Begg both members of parliament.  The children took part in a discussion with Trevor Philips and the MPs about becoming an MP and what the job entailed. The focus of the discussion was on equalities and why it is important that all groups within society are represented in Parliament. The children made some very interesting and thoughtful comments as well as asking some challenging questions but none of them felt they would like to become MPs..

On Time Teds

The winners of the On Time Teds this week are Reception with 0 late marks and Year 3 with 3 late marks   Well done to both classes for being so punctual.

Walk to School Week

Walk to school week takes place from Monday 5th October. Children are encouraged to walk to school rather than come by car. Of course scooting, cycling, running hopping and even skipping are acceptable and children can collect stickers for all those modes of travel. So leave that car at home and get walking!

Cycle Training

If you are interested in cycle training for your child then here’s your opportunity. The cycle training is aimed at children aged 9 to 13 and takes place at Preston Park during half term. Ring Emily Tester on 01273 293847 if you are interested.

Book Fair

A book fair will take place in the Library on Wednesday 7th October. Children will have the opportunity to buy books during the day if they wish or at the end of the day with their parents or carers. The school receives commission for books sold but please don’t feel obliged to buy.

A Walk in the Woods

Year 1 and Year 2 are off to Stanmer Park next week for a walk in the woods as part of their learning journey.

Football Tournament

The Middle Street football team have played their first tournament in the small schools 7 a side competition last Friday. The team played extremely well but unfortunately were not winners this time. Well done to all those who took part and those parents that helped and supported from the sidelines. Thank you too to Ms Busby who ensures we take part in the tournaments and accompanies the team.

We have a girls football tournament coming up very soon.

Governor News

The Governing Body met for the first time this academic year last Thursday. Mr Roger Wardle was elected as Chair and Chetana Parmar as Vice Chair. We were also joined by a newly elected community Governor Mr Tony Lord.
