Christmas Cards for St Patrick’s Night Shelter

Mr Collins, Lucy, Nicky and Amelia all from Year 5 visited St Patrick’s night shelter in Hove on Thursday to deliver Christmas cards made by the children. The cards were, very gratefully received by Father Allen, who will pass them on to the homeless people who use the shelter over Christmas.

Chemistry Show

Year 5 enjoyed a fun and exciting show at the Dome on Wednesday. The show was an ’explosive, colourful and fun science show demonstrating the power of chemistry’ hosted by Dr Hal Sosabowski from the University of Brighton.

School Association Festive Afternoon Tea

Thank you to all who joined us for a festive afternoon tea on Thursday. It was a very jolly time enjoyed by all. Congratulations to the following people, who won raffle prizes: Issy Mackender and Hayward Lee in Year 4 won the Hampers, Jika Edstrom in Year 4, won Chocolates and a bottle of wine and Ombaashi Grech Cato in Year 1, won a bottle of wine and a family ticket for the Sea Life Centre. An enormous thank you to members of the School Association who put on a delicious Tea for us all and raised money for the school in the process.

Sponsored Pyjama Day

After reading an article about a charity that supports children with cleft palate and cleft lip, Hardy in Year 2 felt strongly that he wanted to do something to help. So today Hardy and Year 2 held a sponsored pyjama day. All the children and Year 2 staff wore their pyjamas to school today to raise money for the Smile Train charity. Well done Hardy and Year 2!

School Association Coffee Morning

The School Association are holding another coffee morning on Wednesday 10th January from 9.00 am in the Family room.

Scarlet Fever

I would like to alert you to the fact that there have been some incidences of Scarlet Fever in the school.

White Heat Family Day

Families are invited to attend hands on science workshops, experiments, demonstrations and debates on Saturday February 24th . Activities are mainly aimed at 10 –15 year olds. The venue is to be confirmed.

Bright Sparks Family Day

for younger children aged 7 – 12 years and is an opportunity for hands on fun for curious kids, science magic, gadgets, games and astonishing happenings.

Congratulations to…

even more Middle Street children who have won awards for their poems to be published in ‘A Pocketful of Rhyme East and West Sussex Verses’ due for publication on 28th February 2007. The children are Charley Brown, Caine Lewin-Turner, Niamh Taylor and Gabriel Archibald and Tanisha Flynn. Well done to you all.
Mrs Dyer has been presented with a ‘professional in the school’ award, highly commended in the school professional section of awards presented by the Well Child organisation. Mrs Dyer was nominated for the award by a parent. The parent very much appreciated the support that Mrs Dyer provided for her child, during her time at Middle Street. Well done Mrs Dyer.

Christmas Holiday Dates

We break for the Christmas holidays today and children return to school on Thursday 4th January. Nursery return a little later, on Monday 8th January.

We look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.

Spectacular Christmas Performances

Both the infant (Countdown to Christmas) and junior (Scrooge) Christmas performances were outstanding! We are so lucky to have such talented children in our school.
Thank you to all parents and carers for their support with costumes etc and for all your very positive comments about the shows – they are very much appreciated by all.
Thank you also for your generous donations to the collection, we raised £287, which will go towards our playground developments.

New Parent Governor

I am very pleased to welcome Mr Terry Stewart to the Middle Street board of Governors. All vacancies for parent governors are now filled.

Christmas Display

Do go along to the tourist information centre and take a look at the Middle Street art club’s Christmas display: ‘Brighton at Christmas Time’ The information centre is situated in Bartholomew Square.

Argus Christmas Appeal

During December, Brighton Sea Life Centre is holding a present exchange for the Argus Appeal; follow these instructions if you wish to donate to the appeal. Bring an unwrapped child’s present to the Sea Life Centre with your parents and exchange the present (not your parents) for a free visit to the Sea Life Centre. Your kind donation of a present will be given to a child in need and will help to make their Christmas a happy one.

Blue Peter Shoe Appeal

Jazmine and Courtenay with help from Mrs McGeachin are collecting old unwanted shoes in support of the Blue Peter Unicef Shoebiz Appeal. Blue Peter hopes to raise money to support children in Malawi. Please donate your old shoes in good condition to this appeal. Please bring your unwanted shoes in a carrier bag and place them in the donation box (Jazmine and Courtenay are preparing it at this very moment) in the entrance foyer. School Association Coffee Morning

It was great to see so many people joining us at the Coffee Morning this Wednesday. We have more Coffee Mornings planned for the future. The next one will take place on Wednesday 10th January at 9.00.

School Association Afternoon Christmas Tea

Another wonderful opportunity to enjoy some delicious food and a cup of tea or mulled wine organised by the School Association on Thursday 14th December from 3.00pm in the hall.

Christmas Raffle

Tickets will be available for the raffle until next Thursday. The draw will take place at Christmas Afternoon Tea.

Barbie Bike Needs a Good Home

If you feel able to offer a home to this free Barbie bike please ask at the office. The bike would suit a 4-5 year old, is in good condition and does not have stabilisers.

Christmas Performances

Our Christmas performances are taking place this year on: Thursday 7th December. Infants at 1.15pm and Juniors at 2.15pm.
Friday 8th December. Infants at 9.30 am and Juniors at 10.30am. Tickets are available from the office.

Brighton and Hove Children’s Christmas Concert

The Middle Street Choir will be performing, as is tradition at this year’s Brighton and Hove School’s Christmas carol concert. The concert takes place at the Brighton Centre on Tuesday 5th December at 7.00pm. If you would like to come along and join in with this festive treat tickets are available from the Brighton Centre box office.

Mayor to Visit

We will be welcoming the Mayor – Mr Smith into school on Monday morning. Mr Smith will be taking Monday’s assembly, having a tour of the school and meeting the children. We all look forward to meeting him.

Football Tournament

Middle Street football team are taking part in a football tournament at Waterhall on Monday after school.

Secondary Schools Admissions

I am sure you are all aware of the consultation process taking place in Brighton and Hove regarding secondary schools admissions. The council is currently consulting with the governing bodies (our Chair of Governors is Mr Nick Ebdon) within the authority. Christmas Raffle

The prize is a wonderful Christmas hamper. Buy your raffle tickets from the office. 25p for one ticket £1 a strip.

St Patrick’s Night Shelter Assembly

Father Allen from St Patrick’s night shelter led Monday’s assembly. He talked to the children about homelessness and the work at the night shelter. The School Council has organised a Christmas card competition. All cards entered will be given to St Patrick’s night shelter to be passed on to the homeless who use the shelter. Entries for the competition should be handed in by 8th December.

Christmas Display

Middle Street Art club are having their artwork ‘Brighton at Christmas Time’ displayed in the Tourist Information Centre window. The information centre is situated in Bartholomew Square. Do go along and have a look. Thank you to Mrs Denyer and the art club for all the hard work.

Lost

Leo Pendry lost several lego mini figures in the playground during morning play on Wednesday. If anyone has found Leo’s lego knights, shields, swords and helmets please hand them into the school office.

Congratulations to…

Clare Cole in Year 6. Clare has been picked to join the Blatchington Mill dance group. Clare’s, excellent dancing skills were spotted by the Blatchington Mill Secondary School ‘Creative Arts’ dance teacher. Well done Clare.
Jasmine Way and Jika Edstrom were also winners of the poetry competition mentioned in last weeks Friday News. Jasmine’s and Jika’s poems will also be included The poems will feature in ‘A Pocketful of Rhyme East and West Sussex Verses’ due for publication on 28th February 2007. Well done Jasmine and Jika.
Alice Mudie has achieved her 100 metres swimming certificate for breast, front and back stroke. Well done Alice.

After School Clubs

There will be no basketball, multi- sports or cricket after school clubs until the new year.

Christmas Dinner Money

Please can we have any out standing payments for the Christmas dinner as soon as possible.

Coffee Morning

Please come along for a chat and a cup of coffee on Wednesday morning. This is a chance for you to meet other parents and make new friends. Coffee and biscuits will be served in the Family room. Look forward to seeing you there.
