Walk to School Month

October is walk to school month so we have decided to celebrate the month by having a focus week beginning the 15th October where every one will be encouraged to walk all or some of the way to school. There will be charts to fill in and stickers to collect. Most of you already walk, cycle or use public transport, which is brilliant!

NSPCC Fund Raising

You will already have received sponsor forms home for our fund raising event. All the children from Nursery to Year 6 will be completing a circuit of PE activities on Monday 1st October to raise funds for the NSPCC. A representative from NSPCC spoke to the children in assembly last Monday and told them a little bit about the NSPCC and how the charity helps children.

Puppets in Year 5

On Tuesday the children in Year 5 enjoyed a creative literacy lesson using puppets. The children had to create characters and tell stories using the puppets. This was an excellent opportunity for the children to further develop their speaking and listening skills.

In Thursday’s assembly the children enjoyed a film presentation from the Magic Lantern group who work to inform children about the wonder and beauty of cinema.

Payments

The office staff have asked me to remind you to hand in payments for clubs, dinner money and deposits for Year 6 Little Canada residential. Thank you. Please do let us know if you have difficulties with payments.

Please Pick Up On Time

Once again we seem to have a small group of distressed children who are regularly left waiting in school for a half an hour or more at the end of the day to be collected. If you are persistently having problems collecting on time from school please make arrangements for someone to collect your child.

Kai Scott-Bridge in Year 6 is at it again! Kai is becoming quite a trapeze artist. Kai appeared at the Pavilion theatre last Sunday as part of Brighton’s Youth Aerial circus ‘The Circus of Wonders’. Well done Kai I have certainly heard lots of glowing reports of your performances. Kai very much appreciated his many school friends and teachers that were in the audience to support him.

Half Term
School finishes on Friday 19th October for half term and reopens again on Tuesday 30th October as we have a training day on Monday 29th October.

Mr Brazil’s Workshop

As part of Brighton’s car free day this coming Sunday Mr Brazil will be running a drum making workshop outside Brighton Town Hall. Mr Brazil would love it if lots of Middle Street children came along to join in. The workshop will run throughout the afternoon.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Friday 5th October.

New Course for Parents/Carers

There will be a new course running for parents and carers on Saturdays at the school beginning on 3rd November. The course is aimed at parents/carers of children aged 8 to 10 years and will support parents in developing positive strategies for dealing with some of those difficult moments we all experience with our children. If you would like to find out more and whether this is the course for you then please come along to a coffee morning on Wednesday 26th September in the Family room. You can drop in for a chat about the course any time between 9.00 and 10.30 am. There will be posters up in the school and letters sent home with all children in Years 4, 5 and 6 with further information.

Emergency Contact List

You should find attached to this newsletter an emergency contact form for you to complete and return to the office. Please ensure you return the completed form as soon as possible as we need to update our files.

Water Problems!

Yet again we are dealing with another leak. We have had to switch off the hot water supply and are currently only able to use cold water. This has been fine for the rest of the school but has affected the kitchen. As a result today children having school dinners had to have sandwiches. I have apologised to the children who were kind and understanding when I told them there would be no chips today. I would also like to apologise to you on behalf of the kitchen staff. We hope to have the problem resolved by Monday.

After School Care

If you require your child to be cared for after school please ask for information at the office on the After School Clubs that pick up from Middle Street. I have also been given information about an after school play worker who can offer school pick up and baby sitting in the Southover area. You can contact Rosana on Tel: 07729876085. I am not able to vouch for this person and is therefore your responsibility to ensure this person has been CRB checked, has the relevant references and training and is the right person to care for your child.

Watch Found

A watch has been found in the Year 1 and 2 shared area. Please ask at the office if you have recently lost a watch.

You should hopefully find attached a ‘Dates for Your Diary’ sheet which outlines the main events etc for the year. Please remember the dates are subject to change and you will receive further information regarding the events nearer the time. Please read the Friday News to keep up to date with all the other exciting things that happen through the year.

Hola!

Hopefully as the year progresses I will be able to manage to speak a little more Spanish than Hola and dos cerveza as the whole school will be learning to speak Spanish this year. Children in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 will learn informally a few basic Spanish words and children in Key Stage 2 will have Spanish lessons building up their vocabulary and understanding of the language. Later in the Year we will be holding a ‘Spanish Week’ in school focusing on everything related to the language and to the countries where Spanish is spoken.

Listen to the Friday News

Clever Mr Dyer not only does he have the Friday News for you to read on our web site but he now has a Lion reading the Friday News aloud to you too. Check it out, we were all mesmerised by this very well spoken lion reading to us when we took a look at the web site on Monday.

Lost Property

We currently have a lost property mountain in the hall. Please check the mountain very soon for any lost items before we send it all off to a charity shop.
