School Uniform Day for Haiti

What a strange place Middle Street has been today with everyone dressed in school uniform of one sort or another. Some of the grown- ups interpretations were interesting! Lots of freckles and pigtails!

As always it has been impressive to see all the children making such an effort to benefit others. Thank you for all the generous donations. I am not sure yet how much we have raised to help the survivors of the Haiti earthquake but I know the donations have been very generous.

Year 6 Assembly

We all enjoyed a fabulous assembly performed for us by Year 6. Their theme was space. The assembly was packed with facts about space and wonderful poems written by the children. Well done Year 6! May the force be with you!

Year 5 and Billy Liar

On Wednesday Year 5 took part in a drama workshop with students from Blatchington Mill School. The children explored the play ‘Billy Liar’. They became characters in the play and learnt more about the story in preparation for the visit to the Blatchington Mill Windmill theatre next Wednesday, to watch the play being performed.

Home Computer Grant

You may or may not be aware that the Government has set up a programme that helps eligible low-income families to buy a computer and Internet access. I have attached a letter which provides more information including how to obtain a grant application pack.

Middle Street Jumble!

As always the lost property is building up again so please check if any of your child’s clothing is there. Please could you name your child’s clothing especially the PE kit. Could I also ask you to check that your child has a PE bag which is named and is equipped to hang on the coat peg. Some PE bags have lost their cords and are left on the floor.

Please help us to keep the school as tidy as possible by regularly checking the cloakrooms, lost property and lunchbox trolley for items that your child may have forgotten about.

Subsidised Afterschool Care Club Fees

Starfish Kids Club who collect children from Middle Street are able to offer subsidised afterschool care places. They can offer a reduced fee from £9.45 per session to £3.00 per session. If your child is eligible for free school meals then they are eligible for the reduced rate sessions. Places are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. For bookings and further information contact Dale Maloney on 01273 719520.

Thunder Kids

Thunder Kids is a Saturday morning club for children, dads and male carers which has been running at Middle Street. The club is free and is ideal for children aged 5 to 10. The children get to have a go at a variety of activities with their dads and carers with some time built in for the men to get together for some grown up chat. The third session runs at Middle Street on Saturday February 6th starting at 9.00 and ending at 12.00. Drop in for the morning if you are interested.

Please….

Could children be reminded to hand in their mobile phones and other electronic gadgets to the school office for safe keeping.

Congratulations to….

Ben Spooner in Year 2 who has achieved his orange belt at Soo Bahk Do and also moved up to the Junior class! Well done Ben!

Haiti Earthquake Appeal

We’ve seen the terrible conditions in Haiti as a result of the recent earthquake. I’m sure like all of us at Middle Street you would like to do something to help. To raise funds to help the children in Haiti we are having a ‘School Uniform’ day next Friday 29th January. The uniform can be as amusing as children wish. We are suggesting a customised uniform of white shirt, tie, black or grey trousers or skirt and a black or grey jumper or cardigan. Obviously we would expect some imaginative additions to the uniform. Children can donate 50p or more on the day. We will donate the money to Unicef who are already in the country providing clean water, shelter and medical help.

Goodbye Ms Howells and Ms Murphy

Today we are saying good bye to 2 trainee teachers who completed their teaching practice with us. Mary Ann Howells and Ruby Murphy have been working with year 1 and Year 6 respectively since October. They have been great fun to work with, as well as excellent trainee teachers. Good Luck to both of you and all the best for the future from everyone at Middle Street

Middle Street Football Team

Ms Busby and Ms Martin have asked me to mention out fabulous football team who played in a tournament on Tuesday. Although they did not win they played brilliantly but most impressively displayed an amazing team spirit and fantastic attitude towards other schools involved as well as being very supportive of each other. They are excellent ambassadors for Middle Street School. Well done team I am very proud of you!

On Time Teds

The winners this week are in the Infants: Reception and Years 1 and 2 who are sharing the On-Time Teds this week and in the Juniors: Year 5. Well done all three classes.

Happy New Year

A very Happy New Year to you all! I am very pleased to welcome you back to school and the new term. I hope you all had a very enjoyable and fun Christmas.

Just a little reminder that Ms Katie Whiting is our acting Deputy and SENCo for this term.

Snow Sorry Again!

I can’t believe it happened again! I am so sorry we had to close again and this time for 3 days. Thank you so much for being so understanding about the situation. Our problem is staff getting to school when there is no public transport. However on this last Wednesday following the snow fall public transport remained in action (although limited) and staff were able to get to school as normal.

I am also now an expert on the weather and I could see that the snow was going to move away and the thaw was going to continue. I was able to predict there would be no problems at home time either.

Captain Cholesterol and the Grannies for Mars

Years 3 and 4 enjoyed an amusing musical comedy on healthy eating which links in to their PSHE project they are currently working on. The show was performed on Thursday morning by the Quantum Theatre.

Goodbye Mr Collins

Today we were finally able to say goodbye to Mr Collins in assembly. We should have been waving him off on the last Friday of but of course the snow disrupted those plans. The snow then fell again and disrupted our plans for last week. Finally the snow has cleared and Mr Collins joined us for this week’s Celebration assembly. Mr Collins was awarded a special celebration certificate, good luck cards from the children and we sung Mr Collins favourite song ‘Sunshine in My Heart’. Obviously we made him join in with the signing and a little dance.

You may be interested to know that we have advertised the Deputy Head post this week. We hope to appoint in February and hopefully the successful candidate will join us for the Summer term.

Year 5 Swimming

Unfortunately Year 5 swimming was cancelled due to the weather on Wednesday. Swimming sessions will start next Wednesday. Children should meet at the pool entrance at 8.45 am. Parents and carers should wait with their child until Ms Busby arrives. Please do not leave your child unaccompanied as we cannot ensure their safety.

On Time Teds

The winners this week are in the Infants; Year 1 and in the Juniors Year 6. Well done to both year groups

Autumn Term On Time Ted Winners

The overall On Time Ted winners for the Autumn Term are Year 2 who won the On Time Ted 8 times last term and Year 3 who won 6 times. Congratulations and very well done to both classes. Each class wins £25 to spend on whatever they choose for their classroom.

Mrs Denyer would like any old bicycle wheels you may have for part of her leaning journey.

School Meals please remember that school dinners must be paid for in advance. We have rather a large debt already this term.

Half Term Holiday

School closes for the half term break at 3.05 pm on Friday 12th February and re-opens on Monday 22nd February
