Reception Class Assembly

Reception children you were fabulous today! We all really enjoyed your story of Mr Gumpy’s Outing. Thank you  for singing so beautifully. What a great assembly you performed for us and what stars you are! Well done.

Brighton and Hove Schools Olympic Torch

The Brighton and Hove schools Olympic torch arrived at Middle Street onTuesday. The whole school were in the playground to applaud the arrival of the torch and then we all celebrated with a little bit of Zumba. On Wednesday morning, Saffie, Teddy and I walked the torch up to St Mary Magdalen Primary where we were greeted by a playground full of children all cheering. Saffie and Teddy ran a lap of the playground before passing on the torch. Thank you Saffie and Teddy for representing our school for this special Olympic event.

Sports Relief Zumba

We all really enjoyed the Zumba sessions over the last few weeks and especially enjoyed last Fridays Sports Relief event. We have had little bursts of Zumba this week too. If we hear the music we can’t help but burst into our Zumba moves! So I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Daly for all his time and effort making sure we learnt the moves and had such a great time. Thank you Mr Daly we look forward to more Zumba in the future!

Parents Consultation Evening

Thank you to all those parents and carers who came along to our parent consultation evenings this week. If you were not able to make it this week please arrange a time for after the holidays to meet with your child’s class teacher.  It is very important to your child that you hear how well they are doing in class and what their levels of attainment are.

On-Time Teds

This week’s Key Stage 1 winners are Year 2 with 1 late mark and in Key Stage 2 the winners are Year 5 with 0 late marks Well done to both classes for being so exceptionally punctual.

Winners of Punctuality Prize

The winners of this term’s on time teds punctuality prize of £25 are in Key Stage 1: Year 2. In Key Stage 2 the winners are: Year 3 and Year 5. Congratulations and well done!

Scooters in Racks Please

Please could scooters be stored in the scooter racks outside and not in the school foyer or cloakrooms. If you need a security bar we can give you one for a deposit of £1. (we are still waiting for a delivery of more bars)Please put your name down for one at the office.

Children’s Parade – Saturday 5th May

Workshops begin after Easter to prepare for the children’s festival parade. The theme is ‘Story of Stories’ and Middle Street’s take on the theme is ‘The Jumblies’ by Edward Lear. More information about what to wear at the parade to follow soon.

Good Luck To….

Alex (year 3) and his mum are running the Brighton marathon on 15th April. Alex’s mum will be pushing him in his wheel chair! They are raising money for the charity AMAZE who are amazing at supporting families of children with special needs. Let’s Dance

Well done Year 3! Your dance performance at the Dome last night was absolutely fabulous. We are all so proud of you and how brilliantly you represented the school too. Thank you to all the staff who went along with the children and to the parents for their support. All very much appreciated. Thank you.

Mad Hatters Easter Tea Party

The PTA organised another delicious tea party for us yesterday. There was yummy chocolate, cakes and other delights for all to enjoy. The tea party raised £360 for the school. We are currently raising money to improve our playground and outdoor spaces.

Sports Relief Zumba Flash Dance

Everyone joined in with our sports Relief Zumba flash dance this morning at the beginning of the day. We ended assembly this morning with a surprise Zumba dance and at various times of the day we have responded to the music as it strikes up unexpectedly by putting our Zumba moves into action! It has certainly kept us on our toes. I think we must now be the fittest school in Brighton. We are still collecting donations for sports relief so if you wish to donate please leave your donation at the office. Partnership Schools Football Tournament

Our Year 4 football team came second in the City Centre Schools partnership tournament which took place yesterday afternoon. There were 8 schools competing. Well done and thank you team! You did really well and we are, of course very proud of you! Thank you to the parents who came along and supported.

No Violin Lessons

There will be no violin lessons next week. Lessons resume the first Tuesday back after Easter (17th April)

Reception Class Assembly

Children from Reception will be performing in next week’s Friday assembly. Reception parents and carers are welcome to come along and join us for the assembly. Assembly begins about 9.10 in the school hall.

Brighton and Hove Schools Olympic Torch

To mark this year’s Olympics the Brighton and Hove schools have organised an Olympic torch to travel from school to school over the next few weeks. The torch arrives at Middle Street on Tuesday 27th March from Carlton Hill Primary and we will then pass it on the St Mary Magdalen’s Primary school on Wednesday 28th March.

Parents Consultation Evening

Letters were sent home last week regarding parent consultation evenings on Tuesday 27th March and Wednesday 28th March. If you have not received a letter please ask the class teacher or a member of the office staff. You will need the letter in order to make an appointment

Lost

Surranne in Year 2 has lost her rainbow bush baby. Please check you have the right bush baby and if you discover a rainbow bush baby that is lost and lonely please return it to Surranne

Family Seal Celebration

Our family seal group has its final session next week. Thank you to those parents who have taken part. You have all been brilliant. We will be running another group soon so look out for details in the Friday News.

Let’s Dance

Year 3 are performing at the ‘Let’s Dance’ festival taking place at the Dome this coming Thursday 22nd March in the evening. Good luck Year 3 and have lots of fun. Your dance is fabulous!

Adult Choir Performing

The Middle Street adult choir are performing on Saturday 24th March at the family festival taking place at the Windmill theatre. The theatre is based at Blatchington Mill secondary school. The choir are performing a variety of songs and sound absolutely amazing!

Easter Afternoon Tea

The PTA is holding an Easter Afternoon Tea also known as the Mad Hatters tea party on Thursday 22nd March. The tea party will take place in the hall from 3.15 till 4.30. There will be an Easter Bonnet competition and fancy dress, Easter egg raffle, craft stalls, tea and cake plus lots of other activities. The PTA need donations of Easter eggs, cakes and wine please. Please leave your donations at the school office.

Donations for Sports Relief will be very gratefully received.  Children can donate 50p and come dressed in a sporty outfit for school. There will be a couple of surprise events during the day to add to the fund raising fun. Ms Busby has sent home a letter with details today.

Fire Brigade to Visit Year 1 and 2

Children in Year 1 and 2 are looking forward to a visit from the Fire Brigade on Tuesday 20th March.  Brighton residents will have to put any fires or kittens that need rescuing on hold while they are with us.

Kent Deputies Visit Middle Street

A group of Deputy Head teachers from Kent joined us for the morning. The y came along to find out about our caring ethos, creative curriculum and have a tour of the school led by a group of our brilliant year 6 children.

The Deputies enjoyed their visit and were full of praise for their tour guides. Thank you Year 6!

Preston Manor Year 4

Year 4 had a very enjoyable time visiting Preston Manor. They dressed up in Victorian clothes and took the various below stairs roles from that time period.

Olympic Ring Fundraising Event

As part of the celebrations for this year’s Olympic event we are holding a special fund raising event for the Martlets Hospice in memory of Karen Sinclaire. Karen spent her last weeks at the hospice in Hove where she was cared for in a comfortable environment. 

Rachel Chitty from the Martlets joined us for assembly on Tuesday where she explained the event to the children. We will let you know more details soon.

Let’s Dance

Year 3 are currently refining their dance moves ready for their performance at the Dome for the Brighton and Hove Schools dance festival. Their dance performance is the evening of 22nd March.

Dates for Your Diary Coming Up

The Spring term parents and carers consultation meetings take place on Wednesday 28th March and Thursday 29th March. This is a change to the original dates so please amend your diaries. A more detailed letter will arrive home next week.

Governors Meeting

The full governing body are meeting for their spring term meeting  on 15th March. The minutes of the meeting will be available on the Governors section of our community notice board in the school foyer.

Gardening Club Need Your Help

Mrs Purdy and the gardening club have plans to transform the front playground planting area. They wish to build some raised beds, build some seating and arches using reclaimed wooden sleepers. The gardening club would really appreciate some parent volunteers who can help with the design and build of this exciting project. Gardening club is on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. Please let Mrs Purdy know via the school office if you are able to volunteer.

Basketball club

Due to the Easter tea we will not be able to have basketball club on Thursday 22nd March, so we have arranged for Daniel to come into school the following Thursday for the last session.

Pirates, Tinkerbell and Peter Pan

We’ve all had fun today dressing up as book characters. The children came in a variety of excellent costumes. Some were a bit hot by the end of the day in their furry costumes. The staff theme was Peter Pan. We had lots of pirates and Mr Smart enjoyed dressing up as Tinkerbell. I’ve been rather pleased with my outfit as Peter Pan. Green is obviously my colour! Mr Brazil has especially enjoyed the day as he had a head full of hair!

Cool! A 60s Festival

Years 5 and 6 had a groovy afternoon at their 60’s festival in the style of Woodstock. They prepared lots of delicious food and made t shirts and various other items to sell at the festival. They got into the 60s groove by dressing up in psychedelic clothes and saying ‘peace man’ and holding up two fingers, in the appropriate way, obviously. Well done years 5 and 6 I know how hard you have worked to make sure your festival was a success. Thanks to all the parents too who have helped with preparations and lending their clothes to the children. You’re all just so groovy!

Family SEAL Group

Parents and children attending our Family SEAL group on Thursday afternoons are having fun and enjoying the opportunity to talk about their experiences as parents and working on activities with their child. The group is a great place to chat through issues and gain support as a parent. More groups will run in the future so do look out for the next group in the Friday News.

Preston Manor Experience of Life Long Ago

Year 3 enjoyed their experience this week of working as servants and maids at Preston Manor. They learnt the different cleaning methods and cooking techniques from the past. They found out firsthand what life was like living and working in a grand house and just how strict the working conditions were long ago.
