Our next baby is due after Easter. Abi St Claire our Reception teaching assistant leaves for her maternity leave at the end of this term.

Bedtime Story

On Wednesday evening we closed the blinds put on our PJs and snuggled down for a bedtime story. Children were invited back to their class at 5 on Wednesday evening to listen to their teacher read a bedtime story to them. Everyone was cosy and comfy enjoying a cup of hot chocolate while they listened. Thank you to everyone who made it back to school for the story.

Wear a Wig Day

To support Red Nose Day and help raise money for charity we thought we would celebrate by wearing a wig to school next Friday 15th March. Change your whole look with an outrageous wig or perhaps something more subtle. If you don’t have a wig to hand then a wacky hairdo will be just fine. Please donate 50p and leave at the school office. Parents and carers please join in too. We’ll be looking out for the most interesting wig or hairdo.

Parent and Carer Consultation Evenings

A reminder that you should have received your parents evening consultation letter this week with details of making an appointment. If you have not already done so please make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s learning progress. You can phone the office to make an appointment if necessary.

Brighton V Huddersfield

We had an absolutely fabulous time last week at the Brighton v Huddersfield game at the Amex stadium. The children we took along were amazing and really got into the spirit of the event! How lovely that they could make as much noise as they wanted and it didn’t matter! Thank you to the school staff who gave up their Saturday to come along with the children to the game. Thank you too to those parents who sent me an appreciative email. I’m looking forward to going again if we get the chance.

Saying Goodbye to Emma

We are saying goodbye to Emma Cave our school counsellor at the end of this term. Emma has been working with us supporting children for 8 years. We are very sorry to say goodbye to Emma as she is very much part and a valued member of the Middle Street team. The school is moving from the current counselling service to a different Counselling service; Dolphin House and naturally they have their own counsellors.

Family SEAL

We have been a bit disappointed that our group for this term’s Family SEAL is so small. We need a much bigger group to make it more fun and interactive. It is not too late to join and remember it’s a great way to meet and know other parents. So please let the school office know if you would like to give it go. You will be pleased you did. Sessions are aimed at parents of key stage 2 children and are on held on Tuesday afternoons.

Full Governors Meeting

This terms full governors meeting takes place on Thursday 14th March. Minutes of the meetings can be found on the governors notice board in the school foyer.

She has a giving page and you can sponsor her at: https://my.rednoseday.com/sponsor/rubysw

Spelling Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed the recent spelling survey, many of you did respond. It was quite clear from the responses that 100% felt that learning to spell was very important. There were  mixed responses re: your understanding of your child’s spelling development and how we teach spelling at school. So we have a few areas to work on and improve to ensure you have a good understanding of your child’s achievement in spelling and how we can support you in helping your child at home with spelling.

Brighton V Huddersfield

A group of children and school staff are attending the Amex stadium tomorrow for the Brighton v Huddersfield match. We are all very excited about this opportunity to watch the Albion play. We are hoping Andrea Orlandi will give us a wave in between scoring goals!

Thank you to all those members of staff giving up their Saturday to take the children along to the game.

Brighton and Hove Albion Women’s Team

The Albion’s women’s team play regularly at the Withdean Stadium on Sundays at 1.00 pm. There will be after-school clubs and an assembly or two to promote women’s football.

Parent Consultation Evenings

Our spring term consultation evenings take place on Wednesday 13th March and Thursday 14th March. Year 3 and Year 5 will have slightly different arrangements.  A letter with more details will arrive home on Monday so do look out for it.

Attendance and Punctuality

For some families regular attendance at school and for many families punctuality continues to be a problem. At school we know what a negative impact poor attendance and regular lateness can have on a child’s self esteem, well being and learning. It is the responsibility of the adults to get their child to school on time and there are no excuses for regular lateness. If your child has poor attendance we will look into the reasons why and you may be contacted by the school and later if things have not improved the local authority will be in contact. Punctuality is monitored by the school and if there is continuous lateness the school will be in contact and action taken to help you improve and get your child to school on time every day. If you are having personal problems which are causing your child to be absent from school or late please lets us know we may be able to help.

Gardening Club

Mrs Purdy has gardening club spaces. Do let the office know if your child is interested in joing the club.

This is part of an initiative called ‘Space Invaders’, a collaboration between the School of Education at the University of Brighton and CIRCY (the Centre for Innovation and Research in Children and Youth) at the University of Sussex. It aims to facilitate children and young people’s interventions into public spaces and to engage with adult anxieties about social media and new technologies by helping young people educate adults about some of the creative and innovative ways they use them. Tomb Raiders

Year 3 children have been busy investigating who raided their Egyptian tomb. Today in assembly they told us all about their detection work and that the mystery remains unsolved. You can read all about it overleaf. Thank you Year 3 for a fabulous assembly. Good luck with your investigations. It really wasn’t me!

Year 5 and Year 6 Evacuated

Year 5 and Year 6 caught the train this morning at Brighton station. They were met at their destination by a stern gentleman who was the billeting officer. Later the host families haggled over which children to choose. The children have talked a lot about how it must have felt to have been parted from your family and often from your siblings too. The children had an amazing experience today thanks to the fantastic parents who played very important roles in this drama. Thank you to the staff and all the parents who dressed up in role and helped. Thank you, also to Mr Williams for your very much appreciated voicemail about the how wonderful the children were today.

Family Seal

We are pleased to announce that after half term we are offering parents and carers another opportunity to learn more about Family SEAL (social and emotional aspects of learning) following the success of our last two courses. The course is designed to develop positive links between home and school and its aim is to support children in developing social and emotional skills. The course runs over 6 weeks and takes place in school. The course is run by our learning mentors: Tim and Alan. If you are a parent of a child in years 4, 5 or 6 and are interested in finding out more then join us for an introductory session on Tuesday 5th March at 2.15. Seagulls and Water

We were expecting our Albion players in this week with Southern Water to begin the ‘World of Water’ project with a Key Stage 2 class. Obviously Gus (the Albion manager) had other ideas for his players following a poor game on Saturday, clearly wanting the players to focus on training! So the project and workshop will take place next Thursday instead.

On-Time Teds

This week’s Key Stage 1 winners are Reception with 1 late mark and in Key Stage 2 the winners are Year 3 with 2 late marks. Well done to both classes for being very punctual.

Smelly Lunchboxes

Oh my goodness those lunchboxes and carrier bags left for days on the lunch box trolleys really do become very pungent and green! Please remind your child to bring their lunchbox home every day. Please could you also ensure that your child has a proper lunchbox rather than using carrier bags or rucksacks? I try and sort through the trolleys each week as does Toby our site manager. I do throw away many mouldy lunchboxes which seems such a waste.

No Keyboard Lesson

There will be no keyboard lesson on Monday 4th February.

Be On Time Please

Children love it when their class wins the on time ted on a Friday. They know when they win the bear that it means the possibility of winning a prize for their class at the end of the term. To win the bear their class has to have the least late marks in the register for that week. Unfortunately some classes struggle to win because one or two families in their class are regularly late for school. If punctuality is not a priority for you then I would like you to reconsider. Being regularly late for school impacts on your child’s learning and friendships and the learning of others. It also means their class has less chance of winning that cuddly on time ted. So please adjust your morning routines and get to school by 8.45 everyday. Here is a thank you from me, the staff and Middle Street children to those of you who are here every day on time. Award yourself a virtual on time ted!

On-Time Teds

This week’s Key Stage 1 winners are Years Reception and 2 with 3 late marks each and in Key Stage 2 the winners are Year 4 with 5 late marks. Well done to all three classes for being punctual.

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Our school nurse; Gill is off soon to Argentina to do some voluntary work in an orphanage. So today to help raise money for the children Gill will be working with , children came to school dressed in the clothes of the career they are interested in pursuing when they grow up. We have all been amazed at the variety of careers children are interested in which ranged from superheroes, princesses and fairies to forensic scientists to astronauts, actors,  singers, vets ,animal sanctuary managers,  and many more. Well done children  you looked amazing. Thank you too to those parents and carers who kindly came in to talk with children about their jobs.

Fruit or Veg Snacks Only Please

Brighton V Huddersfield Game

On March 2nd Brighton and Hove Albion are playing Huddersfield at the Amex Stadium. Middle Street has been lucky enough to have been allocated a limited number of tickets for children. We have received these tickets because we a member of the Young Seagulls Schools Project. The cost of the ticket per child is £5 and includes entry to the Amex and travel. Staff members have agreed to give up some of their free time to accompany the children to the game. So I am sure you will agree this is an amazing opportunity. The offer is for children from Year 2 up to Year 6. If you would like to know more and haven’t yet received the letter, from Karen Busby do ask at the office about this opportunity.

It’s Snowing!

It seems that snow has arrived! Do check that the school has an up to date mobile number for you. If the school closes because of snow problems we will text you so it’s very important we have your correct contact number on our systems. Mr Dyer will also place a message on our website informing you of school closure. I also inform local radio stations and they broadcast a list of schools that are closed but this is not very reliable as it can be very difficult contacting the stations.  You can also check the Brighton and Hove Council website as they have a list of school closures. Again it sometimes takes a while before the school appears on the list depending on when they update it.

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Our school nurse; Gill is off soon to Argentina to do some voluntary work in an orphanage. We thought it would be nice to support Gill in this adventure and raise some money for the orphanage. So next Friday 25th January children should think about what career they are aspiring to when they grow up and dress accordingly on that day. A donation of 50p (or more if you wish) can then be made also on that day. If you are interested in talking to your child’s class about your career choice please let your class teacher know. So many of you have interesting careers that we would love to hear about so don’t be shy.

Baby Coelho

I am delighted to announce the arrival on the 17th December of baby Sid Coelho. Mrs Maddie Coelho our Year 4 teacher is over the moon with her early Christmas present. Both mother and baby are doing really well.

Parents and Carers of Key Stage 2 Children (Year 3 to Year 6)

If you need to discuss an issue with your child’s class teacher please arrange to do this at the end of the day. Teachers are not available to have discussions with parents and carers at the beginning of the day. If you need to leave a message for the teacher please do so at the office and they will pass it on. Although teaching assistants are not responsible for dealing with issues they are happy to pass on a message to the teacher.

Parent/Carer Group Meeting

We have a other parent and carer group meeting on Thursday 24th. The meeting is from 2.00 till 3.00. The focus of the meeting will be on learning to spell. So come with your experiences and with ideas and thoughts on how you would like us to support you in helping your child with learning to spell.

Magic Maths and Mystery Workshop

We had a fabulous turn out for our Magic Maths and Mystery workshop. We were all enthralled by the end of the workshop. Welcome Back and Happy New Year

It has been a very enjoyable first week back and everyone seems to have settled back into school routines. Each class is starting a new Learning Journey, so there have been lots of exciting and sometimes mysterious things going on around the school.

There are a few new children joining us this term, so I would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome them and their families to Middle Street.

I would also like to welcome back Mrs Katie Jones our Deputy and Special Needs coordinator. Katie is returning after a year’s maternity leave. She will be working on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Mr Smart will be managing things in his role as Assistant Head on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Swimming Starts Next Week

We had a bit of a muddle this week with swimming but just to confirm with Year 5 parents and children swimming lessons begin next Thursday.

If It Snows…

It seems that snow may be heading our way. At the moment I don’t think it will be causing us any problems. However this maybe a good time to remind everyone to check that the school has an up to date mobile number for you. If the school closes because of snow problems we will text you so it’s very important we have your correct contact number on our systems. Mr Dyer will also place a message on our website informing you of school closure. I also inform local radio stations and they broadcast a list of schools that are closed, but this is not very reliable as it can be very difficult contacting the stations.

Friday Sing-a-long

I thought I should remind you all about our Friday morning sing a long before school on Friday mornings. Everyone is welcome to join Mr Brazil and I in the hall to start the day with a song. So this is the new plan: the Middle Street gate will open at 8.30, the Boyces street gate will open as usual at 8.45. Doors to the school will open at 8.40 except on Fridays when the hall doors will open for parents, carers and children who are joining in for the sing-a-long. Goodbye to…

We will be saying goodbye at the end of this term to Ms Burbridge who has been teaching in Year 5 on Mondays and Tuesdays. We have really enjoyed working with Ms Burbridge and are sad to say goodbye. Thank you Ms Burbridge, we will miss you.
Mr Daly has been helping out as a teaching assistant in Year 1 but sadly his role has come to an end. I am sure, though, that Mr Daly will be volunteering and helping out where he can in the future, so it’s not really goodbye. We have really appreciated Mr Daly’s help so thank you so much for all that you have done for us.
